A couple of months ago, I stumbled upon an artist I hadn’t heard before: Memorex Memories. It felt serendipitous—the kind of self-directed music deep-dive where the right sound finds you, unannounced.
The first album I listened to was Thanks for Listening. From the very first notes, I realized it wasn’t just background music—it was pure atmosphere, mood, and minimalism. It's the kind of track that makes you lean back and just drift.
A Sonic Nostalgia Trip
The title Thanks for Listening says it all—it hits with that personal mixtape energy. The track carries a dreamy, vaporwave-leaning haze, where synths and lo-fi textures blend like flickering VHS static. Listening to it felt like leafing through half-remembered memories that somehow felt immediately familiar.
It transported me straight back to the days of cassette tapes and VHS—where the cracks and hums were part of the charm. The audio feels aged in the best way—a postcard from another time.
Behind the Music: Who Is Memorex Memories?
Memorex Memories is the alias of Sean Harte, a synthwave producer based in Glasgow, Scotland
In his early career, he performed as Mr Sunshine, releasing the Climbing Green Hill EP in 2015. The Memorex Memories identity crystallized in 2017, beginning with the single It’s Very Sunny, premiered via the Electronic Gems YouTube channel :
In 2018, he released a series of singles—Curious Alice, A Way Home, and Thanks for Listening—which elevated his presence in synthwave and vaporwave circles
Fast forward to 2019, and he dropped the In Motion mini-EP, followed by his full-length debut Pictures of Purple Skies in late 2019. His sophomore album, The Life of Riley, arrived in 2020 via the California-based label Stratford Ct.
His influences are lush and varied—Boards of Canada, Aphex Twin, Brian Eno, Flying Lotus, Washed Out, Tycho—and he’s spoken about how hearing In a Beautiful Place Out in the Country by Boards of Canada was a transformative moment for him
My Soundtrack for the Moment
These days, Thanks for Listening is the soundtrack of choice for my long homelab nights and quiet mornings looking out over the Atlantic. Whether I’m expanding my DIY compute cluster or sipping coffee in reflective silence, the track just fits—melding into the moment while standing out with its particular nostalgic glow.
Why It Stuck With Me
Some songs come and go; others embed themselves in a moment of your life. For me, Thanks for Listening is tied to this season of late-night coding, tinkering with my Starlink-powered setup, and feeling the interplay of memory and future around me.
So here’s to Thanks for Listening—and to the creative force behind it, Memorex Memories.
